Jakob Nielsen's article about information overload:
Says email is getting worse and people seem to want to move to instant messaging instead, then shows why IM is not a good choice (email doesn't break the flow of work, being asynchronous), and I agree. This is exactly why I like email.
Mentions a control panel paradigm, which I'd implement as a web-page, or maybe a Gtk app. Must look into it.
So yesterday, just before I turn onto the street where the lab is, the bike chain breaks. I thought it had just fallen off the lowest gear again, but no, we lost the loop. So I dragged it in to work, hung around, then dragged it out again. I half-rode half-walked it to the bike place, which is between half a mile and a mile away.
Half-walked half-rode: no chain, so can't pedal (almost sprained myself by reflexively trying to pedal -- no resistance, so all the effort goes straight into motion). So I sat on the bike and pushed along with one foot or the other. My left ankle had atwinge after a while, so I figured I better stop that before I hurt myself.
Left it there to be fixed, and asked them to fix the gearshifts while they were at it. Walked back to work, went home, had lunch, walked to the bike place again. It was fixed, and really really smooth. I brought it home and put lots of oil in the gears.
I can use the full 18-gear range now, but rarely do (1-1 to start out quickly in the mornings, 2-1 through 2-6 in normal operation, 3-3 to 3-6 at very high speeds, which I rarely hit.)
Interesting animation. Careful, lots of flickering.
C. Frank Starmer has this page about the bridge
Pictures from the Ft. Sumter trip, including of the Charleston harbor and the Cooper river bridge.
Ran across http://www.livejournal.com/users/z_gryphon/165988.html#cutid1, and >wondered if anyone's actually done a Matrix/SW crossover fanfic. Or >even just a matrix-as-Star-Wars or Star-Wars-as-Matrix.
So my mouse pointer doesn't click where it's pointing, it clicks to the left. So I google and find out about SWcursor, so I stick 'Option "SWcursor"' in the mouse section of the XF86Config-4 file. No go. Some more googling, and I find that it should be in the video card definition. So I stick 'Option "SWcursor" "yes"' in there, and it works. Yay.
Now to do some image manipulation....
Ok, this is weak but bear with me. We recycled a recloseable plastic bag (came with mild cheddar), and put a bar of cream cheese in it. Now that's what I call cheese in disguise!
I've seen things, I've seen them with my eyes
I've seen things, that're often in disguise
Like carrots handbags cheese....
harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - Someone wrote down the passwords on a piece of paper and lost it. Someone else found the paper. "abysmally foolish", says Professor McGonagall.

http://geekgirl.dk/linux/ links to the ms matrix story on my site, and the 1st and 3rd links from google are for the same story. Whee.
BTW, I read on some site (bink.nu?) that MS's Matrix parody says, take the red pill and you stay in Wonderland. The red pill represents MS, and the "blue pill" is IBM. Does this imply that MS is the Matrix, and therefore slavery, and the blue pill is the free world outside the MS matrix?
